Internet Explorer 11 retires June 15, 2022

Over the last year, you may have noticed Microsoft’s movement away from Internet Explorer (“IE”) support, such as an announcement of the end of IE support by Microsoft 365 online services. Microsoft are at the next stage of that journey: announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Because of this, the IE11 desktop application will be retired from June 2022, on certain versions of Windows 10. The IE11 desktop application will no longer be supported, and ultimately disabled via Windows Update, to help ensure a smooth retirement.

How this will affect your organization:

You may have noticed that over the past year, Alliance Business Technologies has been proactively working with our clients to migrate over to the new Microsoft Edge browser. Therefore, you might find that there is nothing you need to do today!

However, if you are an organization using Internet Explorer, or you find that some apps no longer cooperate, now is the time to look into moving to Microsoft Edge and extending the life of your legacy websites and apps using IE mode. Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge will support legacy apps and websites through to at least 2029. If this is your business, let us know and we can add them to IE “compatibility” mode so that users can access them through Microsoft Edge.

Note: As of June 15, 2022, the IE11 desktop application will be removed from in-scope versions of Windows 10 via Windows update. We do not recommend avoiding Windows updates to keep IE11 as Window updates contain critical operating system security patches.

The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer that will addresses key concerns regarding compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.
